This Unique Audi TT Is Full of Surprises!

Ferdinand Piëch, a powerful figure in the automotive world, led the Volkswagen Group from 1993 to 2002. During his time as CEO, he approved some of the company’s boldest and most innovative projects. His legacy includes both extravagant ideas, like the luxury VW Phaeton, and groundbreaking vehicles such as the Bugatti Veyron and the Audi XL1.

Before he became CEO, Piëch played a vital role in creating several legendary cars. Working at Porsche and later Audi, he was heavily involved in the development of famous models, including the Porsche 917 and the Audi Quattro. He was always eager to explore new possibilities in automotive design, leading to some impressive projects even at the end of his leadership era.

One standout creation was a unique prototype called the “TT Coupe RS4,” which combined the body of an Audi TT with the powerful components of the first-generation RS4 Avant. This one-off car took about eight months to build and featured a shortened chassis to fit the TT’s dimensions. The team used nearly all the parts from the RS4, like the axles, engine, wheels, and transmission, making this prototype more akin to an RS4 than a standard TT.

The heart of this unusual car was a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 engine—an engine type never used in previous TT models. Unlike typical TTs, this engine was installed longitudinally (lengthwise) instead of transversely (sideways), and it brought some serious power to the table: 375 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, allowing the car to speed from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 174 mph.

Despite its thrilling performance and exhilarating driving experience, the high costs associated with producing this car meant it never went into mass production. Instead, Audi eventually developed the R8, which served as a supercar above the TT. Although both the TT and R8 have been discontinued, Audi has plans to return to the sports car market with an all-electric model, the Concept C, expected in 2027.
