The New Mazda RX-9: What You Need to Know!

Mazda has a history of introducing stunning concept cars but often doesn’t bring them to life, like the Furai and RX-Vision. However, at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2023, the company unveiled the Iconic SP concept, which appears to be more than just a teaser. Reports from Mazda’s headquarters suggest they are working on a new sports car that will share design elements with the Miata and possibly feature a rotary engine, just like the classic RX-7 and RX-8.

Mazda fans are eager to know what this new car will be called. Given its rotary engine, many hope it’ll be named RX-9. While the name Iconic SP might not make it to production, there’s always a chance Mazda might surprise everyone.

The new sports car is expected to take inspiration from the Iconic SP’s design, which is larger than the Miata. Features like a sleek profile and unique taillights are likely to carry over, but pop-up headlights probably won’t make the cut. The car may also have a carbon fiber chassis, although this could drive up costs.

Under the hood, speculation points toward a dual-rotor rotary engine. This innovative setup could provide high performance, aiming for around 365 horsepower, similar to the concept. Notably, this new sports car won’t replace the beloved Miata; instead, it will be a more powerful alternative.

As for pricing, it might start around $50,000, making it competitive with models like the Nissan Z. The debut is likely expected between late 2026 and 2027.
