Subaru is considering the idea of making a manual SUV again. They recently sent out an internal survey to customers, asking whether they would be interested in a manual transmission SUV, specifically an Outback Wilderness model. The last time Subaru offered a manual transmission in an SUV was in 2023, when they discontinued the manual version of the Crosstrek.
Even though most car manufacturers are moving away from manual transmissions, Subaru still provides some manual options in their sporty cars like the BRZ and WRX. It seems they’re curious if Subaru fans would want a manual option for their SUVs as well.
In the survey, customers could choose responses ranging from “Definitely” to “Definitely Not” to answer if they would purchase a manual SUV in the future. Another survey user shared that they were asked how interested they would be in having a manual transmission for the Outback Wilderness, with choices ranging from “Very Interested” to “Not Interested.”
Currently, the only SUVs in the U.S. that still offer manual transmissions are the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, which are direct competitors of Subaru. If any SUV from Subaru deserves a manual option, it would be the Outback Wilderness, which is designed for adventurous driving.
Even though surveys like these happen often among automakers, they don’t always lead to new products. However, if any brand would consider making a manual SUV, it would likely be Subaru, especially since their fans are known for their passion.
Subaru fans may be holding onto hope, as the last manual SUV option from Subaru was just a few years ago. The manual offerings have diminished over time, with the Forester losing its manual in 2018 and the Outback doing so in 2014.
While there’s no guarantee that a manual transmission will come back to Subaru’s lineup, it’s still an exciting thought. A manual Outback Wilderness would be an intriguing addition to the current market, especially with popular options like the Bronco and Wrangler available.
