The BMW M2, known by its code name G87, is a remarkable rear-wheel-drive coupe assembled not in Germany but in Mexico. This latest version is stirring up excitement, especially with its appearance in a tire-squealing video created by the Red Bull Driftbrothers at BMW’s historic Munich factory. Known for making luxury cars for many years, the factory provided the perfect backdrop for showcasing the M2’s drifting capabilities.
The Driftbrothers have modified the M2 into what they call the “Ultimate Drift Machine,” nodding to BMW’s famous slogan – “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” This uniquely designed M2 is a single-seater drifting monster, skillfully drifting between robotic arms and car bodies within the factory. The stunning drone footage captures intense moments, especially when the camera zooms through the drifting car. It’s the kind of jaw-dropping stunt that would impress even the late tread legend Ken Block.
Even though the M2 is currently being featured, it’s still under development. Elias Hountondji, one of the Driftbrothers, is optimistic that the car will be ready for the upcoming Drift Masters European Championship next year. The modified M2 showcases a striking body kit, complete with wider fenders and a robust rear wing.
When it comes to power, this custom M2 is a powerhouse. It retains the standard M2’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine but with massive upgrades. While a regular M2 CS provides about 523 horsepower, this one-off Drift Competition model boasts a breathtaking 1,085 horsepower. The torque output has also experienced a significant jump, going from 479 lb-ft to an impressive 922 lb-ft. All this power is directed to the rear axle, providing thrilling performance.
In exciting news for fans, there are rumors that BMW might introduce an M2 model with an all-wheel-drive system (xDrive) next year, likely offered only with an automatic transmission. Additionally, the Red Bull Driftbrothers are partnering with the BMW M Academy to help others learn how to drift. These modified cars will allow participants to grasp drifting techniques easier. BMW offers a range of experiences, starting at €490 for half a day of drifting fun up to €1,490 for a full day that even includes taxi laps in the M4 with a professional driver like Elias.
An important fact about the Munich factory is that it will transition to producing only electric vehicles starting from the end of 2027. This change marks the site as the first factory in BMW’s network to shift completely to EVs.
