The Audi A4 is set to leave the North American market this year. Audi has decided to stop producing this popular sedan as it shifts its focus to electric vehicles (EVs) and will integrate the A4 into their new A5 lineup. Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, mentioned that a new electric A4 is being developed, but we might have to wait a few years to see it.
The electric version of the A4 will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform. Originally expected to be released in 2026, there have been delays due to software issues. The first car using this platform is now scheduled for a late 2027 debut, with more models coming in 2028, including the new A4.
Audi confirmed that the new EV will still be called the A4. This sedan has been a staple since production started in 1994, going through five generations. The new version will follow Audi’s naming conventions, where suffixes indicate the type of vehicle, like E-Tron for fully electric cars.
In terms of design, the A4 is likely to adopt features seen in the recent Audi Concept C, which offers a glimpse of the brand’s future styling. This includes sharp lines and a modern front end, though the eventual A4 will have more traditional elements like proper headlights and a more functional cockpit.
The new A4 will be positioned on the same platform that will also support other VW models, including the Volkswagen Golf. This platform is designed primarily for electric vehicles and includes advanced technology capable of supporting multiple types of powertrains.
While specific performance details haven’t been revealed, it’s anticipated that the electric A4 will be equipped with dual electric motors, providing all-wheel drive. It might generate around 400 to 500 horsepower, with performance models possibly reaching up to 700 horsepower. Charging capabilities should be fast, and there are hints that the car might allow other devices to charge using its power.
The expected timeline for the A4’s release isn’t promising for eager fans; the new model may not debut until at least 2027, with sales in the United States possibly starting in late 2028 or even 2029.
Regarding pricing, the new A4 will likely be in the same range as its competitors from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, starting around $55,000 to $65,000. Audi’s new A5 currently starts at just over $50,000, so the A4’s price point will play a crucial role in its market position.
