Ram has been missing from the mid-size pickup truck market since it stopped making the Dakota in 2011. That’s about to change, as Ram has announced plans for a new mid-size truck to rival models like the Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma. Although details are still limited, the new truck is expected to arrive in 2028.
As for the name, fans speculate that Ram could bring back the Dakota, which was popular before production ended. Until the name is officially confirmed, it’s simply referred to as Ram’s new mid-size pickup.
There are discussions about the design and structure of the truck. Early ideas suggested it might use a new unibody frame, but recent reports indicate Ram could opt for a body-on-frame setup like the Jeep Gladiator, which would enhance its off-road capabilities. Most likely, the truck will be available only as a four-door Crew Cab.
The engine options are unclear at the moment, but Ram may offer various four- and six-cylinder engines similar to other models, possibly adding a hybrid option. Some enthusiasts even hope for a high-performance variant, though many trucks focus more on off-road abilities.
Although we haven’t seen prototypes, it’s expected that the design will take inspiration from the Ram 1500 but scaled down for the mid-size market. Inside, expect modern tech features and plenty of customization options. Pricing is anticipated to be competitive, starting in the low-$30,000 range.
